Things To do and See
to See & DoMontgomery offers a wealth of recreational and cultural activities for people of all ages and interests. As Alabama's Capital City, Montgomery is the seat of state government and the catalyst for decisions that are far-reaching.
Montgomery also contains a wealth of historical treasures. The city has been dubbed the "birthplace of Civil War and Civil Rights." It was the first capital of the Confederacy, and the location from which the telegram was sent that started battle in the War Between the States. Montgomery also is the location of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s pulpit, from which he preached the gospel of non-violent revolution in the fight for Civil Rights, and is the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which sparked the movement for equal rights throughout the nation when Rosa Parks, a black seamstress, refused to yield her seat on a city bus to a white passenger.
Today, visitors to the Capital City can visit the First White House of the Confederacy, and see the spot on the steps of the State Capitol building where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as the President of the Confederate States of America. It was on those same Capitol steps that the Freedom March from Selma to Montgomery culminated with a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. asking for equality for all people, regardless of race. Visitors to Montgomery can visit the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, view a mural depicting historic events of the Civil Rights Movement, visit the Civil Rights Memorial designed by famed artist Maya Lin, or explore the Rosa L. Parks Library and Museum. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Montgomery also is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the fifth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world, which draws visitors from throughout the world. The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts houses an extensive permanent collection including Old Master prints by such artists as Rembrandt, Caneletto and Goya, and noted American artists John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper. Additionally, there is world-class ballet, art education opportunities, a symphony orchestra, and more.
There is so much to see and do in and around Montgomery! History, Art, Festivals, Outdoor Activities - there really is something for everyone!
